 IHUK has a new chairman

IIHFEamon Convrey has taken on the role as chairman of IHUK. Mr Convrey is best known to fans in the UK as the Chairman of the EIHL, and as the man behind the attempts to get an arena/rink built in Dublin to host a team from (the fabled Dublin Druids).

It remains to be seen if his chairing of both IHUK and the EIHL will represent a conflict of interests.

 Scims chairman stays.

EPIHL newsIn a dramatic u-turn, Sheffield Scimitars chairman and main benefactor martin Birch has decided to remain at the club.

The decision was taken to avoid folding the club after a suitable replacement could not be found.

 Scims chairman quits

EPIHL newsThe future of another EPL club has been thrown into doubt, as Martin Birch, the chairman and main funder of the Sheffield Scimitars has today stepped down from his position.

It is anticipated that either Bob Phillips (Sheffield Steelers owner) or SIV (Sheffield International Venues, who operate iceShefield) could step in to take over.

 Chelmsford drop out of the EPL

EPIHL newsIt has been announced that the Chelmsford Chieftains are leaving the EPL, and will play for the forseeable future in the ENL South.

This decision was made due to a lack of available sponsors, leaving the club unable to guarantee a competative team for the forthcoming season.

 Thornton new Giants coach

EIHL News

Basingstoke Bison assistant coach Steve Thornton is to take charge of Elite League rivals Belfast Giants for the 2008-09 season.

The 34-year-old Canadian is a former Giants player, having helped them win the play-offs in 2003.

Thornton succeeds Ed Courtenay who was head coach of the Giants for three seasons, leading them to a league title in his first term.

It is believed the new boss has already targeted a number of possible signings.

 Steelers Play-Off champions

EIHL NewsThe Liberata Sheffield Steelers were crownd Play-Off champions on Sunday, after defeating the Cassidy Coventry Blaze 2-0 at the NIC in Nottingham.

 Matsos to carry on at the Steelers

EIHL NewsThe Liberata Sheffield Steelers have confirmed that they have extended the contract of their head coach David Matsos until the end of the 2010 Elite League season

On announcing the news Steelers GM Mike O’Connor Said “Securing our coach for the next two seasons is vitally important for the whole club. Matty has brought the hockey side of our business real strong leadership and stability. Ensuring that Dave was coming back was my priority, now he can go and continue the great job he has started by recruiting a team that can deliver a Championship

”For me extended Dave’s deal wasn’t a tough decision. When he arrived here we needed some direction and he gave us that. He helped bring credibility back to this organisation on the ice. Dave has grown as a coach and he will continue to do that. I have enjoyed         working with himDave brings a work ethic to our club and I am looking forward to this continuing for many years to come”
